VGA card
Basic Troubleshooting Guide
Problem
Cause
Solution or Explanation
1.
When I boot up my computer, there is no display on the
screen.
Monitor cableisnot tightly connected with VGA card.
Check the connection of your monitor cable. Tighten the screw on
the connector.
Your motherboard does not support AGP 4X or 8X.
If your motherboard only supports AGP 1X/2X, it cannot provide
correct voltage to your AGP 4X/8X card. So you will have to change your
Motherboard or VGA card to fiteach other.
If there is integrated graphics function on your motherboard, it
may conflict with your VGA card.
Disable the integrated Graphics from the BIOS setup program.
Other components' fault in your system.
Check your CPU, Motherboard and Memory.
2.
When I boot up my computer, there is no display on my monitor. And I
heard one long beep and two or three short beeps.
The system cannot find the VGA card.
Make sure that you have completely plugged the VGA card into the
AGP slot.
3.
Display abnormal
You have not installed the VGA driver.
Install the graphics driver from the driver CD of the card.
You have not set the resolution correctly.
Enter "Display properties", set the appropriate Resolution, Color
Depth, and Refresh rate.
4.
After I changed setting in Windows or installed a new
graphic driver on my computer, it will not startup again.
You may set the wrong resolution/color depth.
Startup Windows in Safe Mode. (While the system is
booting up, press F8 to bring up the Windows Startup Menu, and then select
"Safe mode".) In Safe Mode, re-install the correct graphics driver or change
back to correct setting.
You may have installed wrong drivers.
5.
System can only work under AGP 4X instead of AGP 8X.
Your motherboard does not support AGP 8X.
Check the user's manual of your motherboard. If the board only
supports 1X/2X and 4X, change your motherboard or VGA card to fit each other.
(Working under AGP 4X mode will affect the performance of AGP 8X cards, but you
still can use it for normal purpose.)
The BIOS setting is forced to "AGP 4X" mode.
Enter the BIOS setup program, set the AGP mode to "Auto" or "8X".
GART driver was not installed correctly.
Re-install the GART driver in your motherboard driver CD.
6.
PC becomes unstable after installing the new graphics driver.
This may occur if the old version of graphics driver has not been
removed before installing the new version of driver.
You may follow the following procedure to solve the problem.
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall the driver from the
system then reboot
2. Reinstall the old version of driver then reboot the system.
3. Repeat step 1 (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs) to remove the old
version graphics driver. Reboot the system to ensure the old driver has been
completely removed from the system.
4. Install again with the new version driver after reboot.
7.
System reports "not enough power"
Some VGA cards have additional power connectors, if you forget to
connect all the power cables, system will report the error.
Make sure that you have connected all the power cables.
8.
System is unstable (halts or resets itself)
The card is too hot.
1. If you have overclocked the card, we advise you to revert to the
original settings.
2. If you have overclocked the CPU or Memory, please make sure the AGP clock
setting in the BIOS is forced to 66MHz
3. If the card has a fan on the cooler, please make sure it's working. If no,
check the power cable of the fan, and clear the dust from it.
Driver conflicts with other components.
Install the latest version of driver.

Optical Drive
Basic Troubleshooting Guide
Problem
Cause
Solution or Explanation
1
The drive cannot be recognized.
Incorrect IDE cable direction
Make sure the red-edge of the IDE cable is connected to the Pin 1
of the interface connector.
Incorrect jumper setting of the drive
Please check jumper setting with the menu.
Incorrect jumper settings on Master/Slave logic
If the drive is attached to another IDE device as a slave, then the
Master drive must have its jumpers positioned properly to function in a Master
/ Slave configuration. Contact the drive's manufacturer or read documentation
for proper settings.
2
The drive recognizes disks too slowly
Combo drives are Multi-Function devices , so recognizing time will
be longer than that of CD-ROM drives
We advise users to use 80 pin IDE cable and enable the DMA transfer
mode.
3
How do Iposition the jumpers on the rear side of the drive?
There are a set of pins labeled as CS, SL, and MA on the rear side
of the drive. If the drive is connected with another drive (such as Hard Disk
Drive) by same IDE cable, please make sure the Master/Slave logic settings are
correct. There can be three kinds of settings:
-
Drive1 set to MA (Master)
-
Drive2 set to SL (Slave)
-
Drive1 set to SL
-
Drive2 set to MA
-
Both of the two Drives set to CS (Cable Select)
4
The drive generates loud noises when reading disks, especially DVD
disks.
Since the disk in optical drives starts rotating from zero to max
speed, the sound is caused by the friction between disk and air. This
phenomenon is called "wind-cutting".
It's natural and will not damage your drive. (The DVD's rotation
speed is much faster than that of CDs)
5
I heard pops or noise when I playback a written music
CD.
Audio CDs made by the CD recorder have no headers for each audio
frame. Since the frame header contains the block address, lack of the header
can cause noise during playback.
Record at lower speed modes (Especially during CD to CD copy).
Reading speed is too high
Reading data too fast can also cause pops and clicks to the audio
output, because audio samples are skipped or repeated during jitter correction.
To prevent pops in audio tracks, write at lower speeds or create a CD image on
your Hard Disk Drive.
6
When I burn audio files, the names of the songs do not appear on the
new CD.
"Track-at-once" mode has been used.
To write in CD-Text, "Disk-at-once" mode should be used during
writing.

Solution
1
Computer will not boot up and makes long beeping sounds.
Improper installation
Make sure that the memory module is completely plugged into the
DIMM slot.
BIOS failed to recognize the memory
Make sure that you have the latest version of the BIOS.
2
The computer boots but no display appears on the screen.
Memory is not compatible with other components
Check your motherboard manual or vendor's website to make sure the
compatibility between motherboard and memory.
Other components' fault in your system
Check your CPU, Motherboard and VGA card.
3
The computer boots but doesn't recognize all the
installed memory.
One or some of the memory module is not compatible with other
components
Check your motherboard manual or vendor's website to make sure the
compatibility between motherboard and memory.
One or some of your memory module maybe is bad
Replace the memory
4
The computer reports a memory parity error during boot it up.
You may have installed a non-parity memory on a parity system.
Replace the memory
5
I have a 512MB memory module, but it does not work.
Your system may not support 512MB modules.
You need a newer system that supports 512MB modules.
6
My ECC memory does not work with the Non-ECC memory I have already
installed, but it works by itself.
You cannot mix ECC memory with Non-ECC memory.
Please replace the memory.
7
I installed four 512MB modules for a total of 2GB. My BIOS
recognized them all, but the Windows only recognized 1GB of memory.
Windows 95/85/ME have limitations addressing large amounts of
memory.
You can upgrade the OS to Windows 2000/XP, which does not have
those problems. If you are running Linux, you may need to enable "High Memory
Support" option in your kernel.
